What the journey to Barajas is like
From Santa María de la Alameda the taxi comes down through the sierra towards the El Escorial area and, from there, takes the roads leading to the A-6 and the Madrid ring roads to the airport. It is a long journey, so when you work out your pickup time, add the whole journey and the airline's margin: 2 hours for European flights and 3 for international ones. In winter, with snow or fog in the sierra, allow even more time.
