Comfort and ease for the passenger: an airport taxi for elderly passengers or people with reduced mobility

For an older person or someone with reduced mobility, a taxi is the most comfortable way to get to the airport because it cuts out walking, stairs and changes: it picks them up at their door and drops them at the departures level of their terminal. For everything to go smoothly, mention any needs when booking (a walking frame, a folding wheelchair, help with luggage) and, if they will need help inside the airport, request the assistance service for people with reduced mobility from the airline in advance.

What to mention when booking the taxi

The more information you give, the better the service can be prepared. These details make the difference:

  • Whether they use a walking frame, crutches or a folding wheelchair, so space can be kept in the boot alongside the luggage.
  • Whether they need help getting into or out of the car or with their suitcases.
  • Whether they are travelling with someone and how many people are going in total. With companions and quite a lot of luggage, a roomier vehicle with up to 7 seats may be a good idea.
  • Whether they need an adapted vehicle to travel seated in their own wheelchair. This requires a specific taxi; we explain how it works in adapted taxis for people with disabilities.

How to prepare the journey so it is comfortable

Pickup at the door

Give the exact building entrance and, if there are steps or a slope, a spot where the car can stop nearby.

Leave with more margin

An older person needs more time for everything. Add margin to the usual two hours for European flights and three for international ones.

Front seat

It is usually the easiest to get in and out of and has more legroom. Ask the driver when they arrive.

Medication and documents to hand

In the hand luggage, not in the suitcase in the boot: that way they are available during the journey and on the plane.

Assistance for people with reduced mobility at Barajas

Spanish airports offer a free assistance service for people with reduced mobility, which accompanies the passenger from signposted meeting points in the terminal to the plane, and the other way round on arrival. The important thing is to request it in advance from the airline or travel agency when buying the ticket or afterwards; European regulations ask for this to be done at least 48 hours before the flight. Without that notice, the service will still try to help, but there may be waits.

When booking the taxi, you can ask to be dropped as close as possible to the assistance meeting point at your terminal. If the flight leaves from T4, bear in mind that it is a very large building; you will find recommended times in how early to arrive at T4.

The journey home

On arrival, the assistance staff accompany the passenger to the exit. So that the taxi is coordinated, when booking the return trip give the flight number and say that the person is travelling with assistance, because it will take them a little longer to come out. How the pickup works in general is explained on the airport pickup page. If a family member is organising the trip from another city, they can book in the passenger’s name and give the passenger’s contact phone number.

Luggage: less weight, less effort

One large wheeled suitcase is better than two small ones, and a light hand bag better than a rucksack. In the taxi the driver can help load it; at the airport, the assistance service takes care of the journey to the plane. If you are unsure which car you need for the luggage, see how to choose the right taxi for your luggage.

Price and booking

The price is fixed by area and does not change because more time is needed to get into the car: from inside the M-30 it is €33, and the other areas are on our fares page. You can book the taxi online stating the passenger’s needs, or call 911 76 00 81 if you prefer to explain it in person.
